Family Love

I just love this family! This is my fourth time shooting with the Romano Family and I am starting to feel like part of the clan. First I shot Gina and Tim's engagement portraits at USC, then I shot the ladies of the family down in Newport Beach when they did a surprise portrait for their dad in 2003. In 2004, I shot Gina & Tim's wedding at the very cool Cathedral of Our Lady in downtown Los Angeles.

Today was a big family portrait with Mom, Dad, sisters, spouses and the newest member of the family, Karina.

All Saints Church, Pasadena

trisha & travis.

man, am I tired. but as usual, I can't sleep. So I'm blogging. Today I got up at the still-dark hour of 6:30am to get ready for today's wedding. I was excited about it because

a.) I think All Saints Church is gorgeous (I shot Eric Stoltz wedding there on July 16th with my esteemed colleague, John Riedy) and

b.) I think Trisha and Travis are gorgeous (I used images from their engagement shoot in my last Inside Weddings Magazine ad!)

I LOVE shooting the details at my weddings, and I couldn't believe it when I heard that Trisha's mother MADE most of the intricate center pieces and details of the Fall themed wedding.

One last thing, Trisha and Travis are avid bikers, and as a send-off they rode off on vintages bikes into the Pasadena sunset as their guests pelted them with Fall leaves. Really gorgeous colors.

And lastly, Amy and Chris (with newest family member, Sophia!) I shot their wedding back in 2001, and when Trisha was looking for a photographer, Amy told her all about me! Thank you, Amy and Chris, for the awesome referral!

In more exciting news, I recently found out that I will be speaking at the Digital Wedding Forum Convention in Vegas next April. This is a big honor, and I'm so excited! I will be doing a new take on the talk I did at the Pictage Partner Conference this past September. Last year I had such a good time getting to know many other wedding photographers from around the country, and I'm sure this year will be much more fun!

Project: the Alphabet

personal projects.

Now that I can actually see the end of wedding season in the not-too-far distance, I really want to start doing a few of my own projects again. Last April a group of my photographer friends and I decided to give each other assignments... just to keep ourselves motivated and constantly finding new ways to see the world. The first assignment was "The Alphabet."

I happened to be going to Disneyland with my two nieces and realized that it was the perfect place for the job. Talk about seeing the world in a new way. Penelope helped me "search" for letters all day, and soon we were seeing them everywhere. She discovered the "E" completely on her own! I did not have a blog back then, so I am posting this now. I will have new assignments (that hopefully I will have time to do!) and will try to post them once a month.

The Beach Club

the adorable o'donnells.

I have watched the O'Donnell family grow over the past six years as I've photographed them for their yearly Christmas card. (Next year, there will be a new member of the family to add to the pictures!) For this year's card, we started at the house to include Kimmy, the dog, and then went down to the Beach Club in the Palisades to finish off at the beach! The overcast day was perfect for soft shadows and didn't deter the kids from playing near the water.

Huntington Library & Gardens

mandy & tim.

Mandy and Tim are getting married at the St. Regis in Dana Point next year, but today we shot their engagement portraits at the Huntington Library. There are several different themed gardens, (Japanese, Jungle, & Shakespeare to name a few) and you can take high tea there if you are so inclined.

Mandy and Tim met me when Tim served as a groomsmen at the wedding of Stefanie and Josh which I shot in July of this year. (Scroll to the bottom of the July archives to see a few favorites from Stefanie and Josh's wedding!)

Tim liked how I worked with the wedding party, and Mandy came up to me during my reception slideshow to say kind words about how she loved my work. I'm so excited to be shooting their wedding because the engagement portrait was really fun and I know they are going to be willing to take my lead to get great shots on their wedding day!

Surf & Sand Resort

jennifer and matthew.

Today's wedding was a marathon of five different locations - we started and ended at the beautiful oceanfront Surf & Sand Resort in Laguna Beach. Matthew is British, and in true British tradition, there was a pool going on how long the best man's toast would be. It ended up being 21 minutes long, and the prize was $120! The winner gave it to the hotel staff as a tip.

Sooo many favorites to choose from!!

Rancho Las Lomas

pam and joe.

My good friend (and talented wedding photographer), Dina Douglass once told me, if you ever meet with clients for a wedding at Rancho Las Lomas do anything you can to book the job! Pam and Joe were married there, and besides the fact that they are the most beautiful couple, the venue is definitely one of the coolest I have ever shot at. The grounds are not only picturesque, but there are unusual animals scattered about. The animals do seem to spend most of their time sleeping, but we got a few great shots!

Here are a bunch (certainly not all!) of my favorites:

Birthday Bowlorama!!

One of my favorite going-out type things to do is bowling. I picked up a bright purple bowling ball (complete with purple shoes!) at a thrift store years ago, so I don't even have to rent shoes or hunt for the perfect ball. Since my twin, Joy, was back in the Bay Area and out with her friends at the Beauty Bar, I made last-minute plans to go out bowling for my (actual) birthday.

happy birthday, jules & joy!

Since my twin sister, Joy, lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and I live in West Hollywood, we decided to spend our birthday together at the halfway point. (Our actual birthday is October 4th, so you still have time to get me something!!!) Joy and her husband, Brett, drove down to Paso Robles while Jason and I drove up. We stayed at the rustic and secluded Dunning Vineyards Inn and spent our weekend visiting wineries and outdoor spas and just relaxing and having a much needed weekend off. We even got to check out Bianchi Winery and had a chance to do some early Christmas shopping for Dad!
