My LA PUG at Robert Evans Studio

As most of you know, I am the leader for the monthly Los Angeles Pictage User Group. Its a great way to not only keep up on the latest offerings at Pictage, but to have a chance to socialize and get to know other photographers in the community better. One way we do this is the monthly Studio Spotlight. Last night's PUG had the very well-known Robert Evans as not only the Studio Spotlight but the speaker as well. It was a HUGE success! Mr. Popular pulled in a whopping 58 photographers!

The PUG was at Robert's very cool studio, and he provided tons of yummy snacks for us! THANK YOU, Robert, for all of your time and the informative lecture. Be sure to check out Robert's newest venture, PhotographyMentor.com where you can learn from the master himself!

Here is Robert dispensing his wisdom...

Everyone taking the wisdom in...

Robert shared a few pics from way back in his very early Hasselblad days... some were really funny!!

Jules Bianchi and the lovely Shannon Lott. (Thank you, Shannon, for making the long drive up, and thank you, Scott, for taking this snap of us.)

J. Brides features Jules Bianchi!

Jason Sandifer of LiveBooks has a cool blog where he talks about all things photography-industry related and features an image a day from his favorite photographers. I have been featured there before for other reasons, but today he chose one of my images to feature as the "Image of the Day!" click the image below to check it out!

Lighting Seminar!!

Many of you who have had a private "Tea for Two" mentorship with me have asked about lighting. I have a very simple but effective lighting set-up that I bring to all of my weddings, and I'm now addicted to it. I hate to shoot a wedding without it! I'm still a huge fan of natural light, mind you, its just that you are given so many more options if you have your own lights to play with as well!

Because of the interest and the seeming need for other photographers to learn about lighting, I am teaming up with the fantastic John Mireles of Ventana Weddings to do a lighting workshop here in Los Angeles on Thursday, January 24th. I'm so excited about it!

John is going to focus more on studio lighting, and I will talk more about on-the-go portable lighting. There will be both lecturing and hands-on training. The workshop will be from 10am - 5pm and the costs are as follows:

$250 if you sign up in November
$300 if you sign up in December
$350 if you sign up in January

This is a super deal if you think about it... the Tea for Two is $200 per hour, and this is five hours of learning!!

CLICK HERE to download a PDF with a course description and outline of the day.

Allied Arts

After photographing the lovely Kelly Family on Sunday, I headed over to the super cute Allied Arts in Menlo Park. I've been wanting to shoot there for a while, so I was excited when Rebecca and Mark suggested it for their engagement portrait!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I just wanted to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving! This is as good a day as any to take a moment to think about all the things in life we are thankful for. Personally, I am thankful first and foremost for my amazing family. They have always been so incredibly supportive and full of nothing but love for me. Today I am spending Thanksgiving at my mother's, and we've been spending the morning carving a turkey and making the table pretty. Yesterday we spent the day at Joy's making her famous cranberry apple pie!! Its fun to make a fuss over a meal once in a while!

I am also so thankful for you, my clients and blog readers. Thank you for all of the support and kind words you have given me over the years. I do feel so blessed, and I hope you are feeling blessed and loved in your life, too.

Here is Mom's table!! (If you look carefully, you can see a certain fluffy dog who is hoping to get in to just check out the turkey...)

Galleria Park Hotel & Foreign Cinema, San Francisco

deborah & mark
november 17, 2007

This past Saturday was really fantastic. I already love shooting in San Francisco, but the fact Deborah & Mark's wedding was in an uber cool art gallery/restaurant/vintage movie theater made it all the more fun. We did most of the portraits early at the funky Galleria Park Hotel because the ceremony happened after sundown. The aisle was lined with candles that really added to the drama of the event. I love Fall colors, and Deborah really made the most of them as you will see below.

A few elements that made the day amazing:

Wedding Coordination: Nelle Johnston of Zah Zoom Weddings and Parties
Flowers: Mary Lois Hare of Loop Flowers
Ceremony & Reception venue: Foreign Cinema

Lastly, I want to thank Chhaya & Sameer for referring Deborah & Mark to me. I shot their beautiful wedding last year when Mark was part of the wedding party!

Estancia La Jolla slideshow

The song for this slideshow is already one of my favorites, but it is especially appropriate for Robyn & Jeff because it was playing when Jeff asked Robyn to marry him. As a lovely gift, one of Robyn's bridesmaids sang it to them during the reception.

robyn & jeff
november 11, 2007

Robyn & Jeff were married on Sunday at Estancia in La Jolla. Robyn is an event planner, so you KNOW all the details were incredible! There was a big debate in the early part of the day as to whether or not the ceremony should be held inside, but I am so glad that it stayed outside - despite the fact that it began to rain seconds before the ceremony began. It made for some truly dramatic photographs!

A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to Erin Gouveia of Erin Kate Photography who flew out from Utah to do a Tea for Two mentor sessoin with me and tag along to this wedding. Erin, you caught some amazing moments, and I am so happy to have met you!

What made Robyn & Jeff's wedding incredible:

wedding and reception venue: Estancia La Jolla
coordination: Robyn Goldberg Weddings & Special Events
day of coordination: Rachel Burger of Bliss Events
floral design: Jennfer Katz, Fiore Designs
Hair & make-up: Byron Williams
printed materials: Heather Murphy of Fayme Press
band: Tony Galla Orchestra
videography: Beth Oslander, Bella Video
hair & make-up: Byron Williams
bridal gown: L'ezu Atelier
honeymoon destination: Buenos Aires & Carmelo, Uruguay

Check back in later today for a slideshow, too! For now, here are a few favorites:

Jules Bianchi speaks at UCR!

a few weeks ago, I was asked by Mary Kristen to lecture as a guest speaker in the Digital Wedding Photography class she teaches at the University of California Riverside extension program. I really enjoy teaching photography, and I had so much fun last week that I was really looking forward to it... despite the long drive! The class was tiny which was cool.. it was much more intimate that way, and I got a chance to talk to everyone there. A few students mentioned that they are planning to sign up for my Tea for Two private mentorship, which would be awesome!

I'm going to work on my 11/11 wedding tonight - I promise - so check back tomorrow for that.

San Diego Wedding

I have been trying to get so much done this week, and I was up until 3am working on the highlights for the amazing wedding I shot on 11/11. I have to speak at Riverside University tonight, so I must get on the road. I promise to work on the blog post for the wedding tonight, but for now, here is an absolute favorite of mine! We had gorgeous soft weather all day and it started to rain JUST before the ceremony. It was stunning!

Flash Flavor

Due to the amount of photographers who read my blog, I want to try to give photography tips more often. A few months ago, my sister, Joy, turned me on to this AWESOME site, Flash Flavor. I know a lot of photographers struggle with lighting, and this site is dedicated to dispensing cool lighting tips and tricks.

Check out the one I picked up - Flash Flavor suggested buying a Unviersal Car Windshield Mount Holder to hold not your cell phone, but your flash! Granted it really suctions best to glass, but if you can find right place to stick it, you can easily maneuver your light by just bending the arm, moving the head of your flash OR the head of the resting cup! How cool is this? I also just purchased an ultrabounce by Lumiquest - one of my favorite companies for flash bounces - so I stuck that on my 580EX along with the Pocket Wizard (to fire the flash wirelessly) and tested out the whole thing on my favorite muse, Ms. Olive.

Speaking at Cypress College

A few weeks ago, I was invited by Greg Bumatay of Bumatay Studio to be a guest speaker for his Wedding Photography class at Cypress College. The class was tonight, so I drove down to Cypress for it today. I am really starting to love public speaking, and it was fun connecting with a bunch of new photographers. Thanks for inviting me to speak and for shooting these great pics, Greg!

Four Seasons Hotel, Beverly Hills

I love shooting with my friends! Joshua Bobrove of Robert Evans' Studio asked me to shoot with him at the Four Seasons Hotel to help cover an extravagant 65th birthday party. The theme was "Larry's World."

Check out the crazy details!

The GORGEOUS dining room:

This stunning globe took over 2400 white roses to create!

There were THREE bands! A funky Country band...

the fabulous West Coast Music...

AND a super secret star headliner that I am not at liberty to blog about!! Suffice it to say he has a new album coming out and it was a surprise to all the guests.

For the party favor, everyone was given framed 8x10's of themselves that had been shot earlier in the evening.

Thanks for asking me to come along, Josh! I had a really fun time.
