David Jay's Free to Succeed Tour

Tonight I went to check out David Jay's Free to Succeed Tour. Jasmine Star was his guest speaker, and both she and DJ were great to listen to. It was nice to see Todd Johnson, Robert Evans, Roberto Valenzuela, April Rocha, Kara Franz, and to meet a bunch of new folks like Christina Domingues and Mark Bassam to name just a few of the photographers who were at the packed out event. One of the tour sponsors is Couture Books, and the samples I saw were just gorgeous. I might have to add them to my studio...

Click here to see if David Jay is coming to your town, and be sure to sign up! If for nothing else but to check out the tour bus with his GIANT face plastered on the side.

I wasn't kidding about my amazing clients!

Today I opened my front door, and a huge box was sitting there for me! While the chilling system inside was intriguing, the best part was the delicious Dean & Deluca treats that came as a thank you from my July 12th clients, Darlene & Jeff. THANK YOU for this, guys! Chocolate covered ANYTHING is my favorite!!!! You are the best! I'm working on your slideshow this week, so check back to see it soon.

Hanging out at the Kubota Bootcamp

Even though I am finished speaking, I'm just hanging out here at the bootcamp for a few days to spend time with Joy and soak up Kevin's amazing PhotoShop knowledge. Since Joy's in-laws are in Bend, her whole family came up for the week to stay with them. Yesterday, Joy's girls came out to model for the group. The girls loved it! I couldn't help myself... I joined in to snapped a few shots, too. Later it was fun to see the hundreds of cool shots the group took of my nieces.

Jules Bianchi featured at Leather Craftsmen

All of my albums are bound at Leather Craftsmen. Their quality is unparalleled, and the customer service I've received from them is always exemplary. They have hundreds and hundreds of photographer clients from all across the country, so I was beyond flattered when they asked if they could feature my work in a sample of their brand new style of album. This is an album that is really going to be unique to the industry!

Leather Craftsmen chose five photographers to create samples from, and I'm so honored be featured along side the amazing talents of Joe Buissink, Mike Colon, Andy Marcus & Jasmine Star.

I'm not at liberty to reveal too many details about the new style of album right now, so DEFINITELY check out the Leather Craftsmen booth at WPPI later this month! The sample they created from the gorgeous Carneros Inn Wedding I shot last October will be there, and its going to blow you away.

This is the email blast that went out this morning... Leather Craftsmen is using red as a theme to tie the new books together, and I can't wait to see them all!

Handmade Furnishings

Yesterday, I spent a few hours with John McDonald of "A Handmade Home." He, Olive and I visited two of his client's homes to photograph some of his finished pieces for his portfolio. John makes gorgeous one-off pieces as well as custom kitchens and cabinets. Although his new website isn't quite ready for public consumption yet, here is a link to his old blog, Mesa Custom Furnishings, if you'd like to check out more work.

Now I love John's work, but I was by far more excited to shoot his client's dogs, Hannah...

Professional Photographer Magazine

This morning, my friend April Rocha sent me an email telling me there was a photograph of ME in the latest issue of Professional Photographer Magazine! I flipped through and sure enough, I found this pic that Becker captured of David Jay taking a self-portrait of himself, Jessica Claire, Dane Sanders and me.

The article celebrates 100 years of photography and quotes David Jay as he shares about his amazing Open Source Photo forum. OSP is a fantastic place for photographers - both seasoned and new alike - to share and learn. Way to go, DJ!!

Olive portraits

Today I had the great pleasure of spending a few hours with the talented photographer and my friend, Ann Hamilton. Ann is very well known for not only her wedding photography but her dog portraits, so when she offered to shoot us I jumped at the chance! I know I am constantly photographing my dog, but I thought it would be great to not only be in front of the camera with Olive, but to see her through another photographer's eyes. It was a wonderful experience! Olive is being featured on her blog right now - click here to check it out!

How CUTE are these?? THANK YOU, Ann! Ann is also going to shoot with me and Joy on Sunday for part two of this weekend's two-part wedding, so I'm really looking forward to that. Part one is tomorrow, so come back to the blog soon to see images!

On Thursday, October 4, Joy and I were together to a. celebrate our birthday and b. shoot part two of a three part wedding. Part two was happening in Santa Barbara, so before we began we HAD to visit the Freedom House of my buddy, David Jay. Check out the kick-ass view from his porch! After the house tour, DJ sat us down to show us some top secret stuff going on at ShowIt... It is unbelievable, but you'll have to wait to check that out at Show It Fast later this year.

Tea for Two with Lilia

I have been having so much fun with the Tea for Two sessions lately. Whenever possible, I bring my mentee to a wedding with me because I think there is a lot to learn from observing how another photographer works. My latest mentee, Lilia Ahner of Lilia Photography just wrote me the coolest testimonial AND put a post about the experience on her blog! If you are a photographer who would be interested in a Tea for Two session, feel free to shoot me an emaill at jules@julesbianchi.com.

The lovely Lilia:

"I came home beaming after my Tea for Two session with Jules Bianchi. Having a private mentoring session customized for my needs with personal attention from Jules was priceless. Not only was Jules enthusiastic and dynamic, but she shared her years of experience and answered my questions about lighting, exposure, marketing, advertising, and client consultations. Most importantly, she taught me how to become organized and to create very specific, manageable goals--both short-term and long-term. She has helped me to think differently about my business and shared so much valuable information that I can definitely take my photography skills and business to the next level. I can't thank Jules enough!"

A presets testimonial!

Many of you know that I have made my custom presets available to the public, and I have gotten a huge response from those of you who have purchased them. (Thank you!) Using the presets will actually be part of the talks I am giving at both Pictage's PartnerCon on September 12th and the Professional Photographers of the Greater Bay Area on September 20th. However, if you would like info about them, just shoot me an email: jules@julesbianchi.com. The presets can be used in PhotoShop CS2, CS3 and Lightroom.

Ed Verosky is a photographer from Austin, Texas, who uses my custom presets, and he just sent me the nicest testimonial. Thank you, Ed! Check it out:

"Jules, I've just used your custom presets on several images I shot for Mingle Jewelry this past weekend. Your presets make it quick and easy to visualize a variety of looks in Lightroom. They actually inspire creativity! In a matter of minutes, I was able to provide my client with so many options we hadn't considered before -- she loved them! I've tried other presets, but yours are my favorites by far. I highly recommend your presets as a valuable tool for professional photographers."

Here are a few images from the Mingle Jewelry shoot he mentions:

Four Seasons Hotel, Beverly Hills

Remarkably, I didn't have any weddings this Labor Day weekend. Rather than take the whole weekend off, I decided to go hang out with FAVORITE photography team, Robert Evans and Joshua Bobrove of Robert Evans Studios to shoot with them on their job at the Four Seasons Hotel. Admittedly, I'm a photo geek.

What I saw:

The Man, the Myth, the Legend that is Robert Evans.

Lauren looking radiant.

Ted would not stop laughing all day!

I shot over Lauren's shoulder to get Ted's reaction when he first saw her. I absolutely LOVE his expressions here!

A jubilant bridal party.

A tiny yellow ribbon kept guests from walking down the aisle.

Lauren & Ted couldn't wait to get married...

I shot my most favorite breaking-of-the-glass image ever!

Sweet details courtesy of The Empty Vase.

The dream team, Joshua Bobrove & Robert Evans.

I thought Lauren's veil had a really vintage look to it, so I decided to use one of my vintage presets on this image. I think it works really well!

A tiny sugar bride & groom adorned the top of their cake! sooo cute!

My Wonderful Clients

I feel so incredibly loved and fortunate! Firstly let me explain just how grateful I am to have the job I have and the opportunity to spend the one day of my clients lives with them that they will treasure forever. After viewing their slideshow and receiving their keepsake book of highlights in the mail, my July 21st clients, Stephanie & John sent me the most thoughtful gift. My present was a matching make-up and toiletry kit to use on my many travels! I'm constantly on the go, so it is just the perfect thing. And I love how its in Jules Bianchi Photography colors, too!! THANK YOU, STEPH & JOHN!! I love you guys!

To me, though, I just love reading how happy they are:

Camera Happy Please

I really LOVE my clients. Earlier this year, Joy and I shot Monica & Martin's beautiful wedding at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco. I'm at my sister's house today and what arrives in the mail but a big thank you package for me, Olive and Abigail! The super thoughtful Monica & Martin have not only sent me a Blythe petite doll (I'm completely obsessed with her) but they found a photographer's outfit for my full-sized Blythe to wear as well. Olive & Abigail got toys and treats!

Monica & Martin - you are so thoughtful. Thank you so much! I love how your Thank You cards turned out. The image you chose to use is one of my favorites from the whole day. When we went to the top of that hill to shoot, I loved that we could see your church down in the background. It just MADE the whole shot!

Check out the loot - You can see Olive back there... she couldn't wait for her rope toy to be photographed before she started chewing on it.

I'm in the Bay Area for a wedding in Sonoma tomorrow, but the first thing I'm going to do when I get home is put Blythe into her new photographer's get up. I think the Engrish costume title makes it perfect.

on to the next yummy...

The BEST part...

Photopiece, Los Angeles

My friend, photographer Leanna Creel, is a volunteer for a cool organization to help inner-city kids called Photopiece. Photopiece is a 10 week course with the goal to expose, inspire and accompany teenagers as they learn basic photographic skills.

Each week they invite a different kind of photographer to speak, and this week I was invited to speak about wedding photography. I brought sample albums and talked about how I started and what it was like to be a wedding photographer. I was very flattered to be asked to speak and very impressed with the kid's work that I was shown.

Custom PhotoShop presets

I have recently started selling my RAW custom presets, and I love it when photographers who have purchased them email me samples of their work after applying the presets.

I offer over 40 of them now, so shoot me an email if you are interested. jules@julesbianchi.com

Check out these beautiful shots from photographers Mary Crow of Nashville, Tennesse and Margaret Smyth of Northern Ireland. I just love both of their work, and its fun to see how the "jb effects" make their images look so vintage and cool. (Not that they weren't amazing to begin with, of course!)

Family photo SAFARI!

Many of you know that my twin sister, Joy, is an essential part of the Jules Bianchi Photography team. She is my second shooter for all Bay Area weddings (and a few lucky Los Angeles ones when we can time it out right!) as well as (award winning) album designer, image editor, publicity manager, etc.

Even though we live far apart, we communicate by cell phone and IM every single day. In fact, we were just IMing tonight when she started sending me images from the safari she just took with her family! She doesn't really have time to go to Africa, but there is an amazing place called Safari West in the lovely wine country of Santa Rosa that will bring Africa to you!

Here are some of Joy's great shots:

On the way to an adventure! (I love that Millie has headphones and Penelope is watching a DVD. When I was a kid, we had to count cars...)

There is SO much good stuff to be had there - candles, clothing, bags, books, jewelry...My personal favorite was the funky candy bar that featured gummy deliciousness of all kinds, the fabulous Dylan's chocolates, and many other kinds of treats.

World Wide (Web) premiere of Jules Bianchi Photography promo video!!

Because I returned from shooting in Seattle so very late last night, I did not plan to get up early. However, this morning Joy woke me with a call to tell me that Ron Dawson of the super creative Cinematic Studios.net (for wedding industry types) AND Cinematic Studios.com (for brides) created the coolest, funniest promotional video for Jules Bianchi Photography! I met Ron last year when we were shooting the same wedding together in Sonoma (me for photography, Ron for cinematography) and we've kept in touch ever since. After working with me on a few more jobs, he's documented a little slice of my life for your enjoyment.

Tea for Two, a mentoring session for YOU!

How cool is this??

Amy Trahant of Take AIM Photography is one of the photographers who recently purchased my xmp files. Today she sent me a few images that she'd created using "jb vintage blue" and "jb sultry." She gave me permission to post them here...I love it!

Amy is also going to be the first person to participate in my new "Tea for Two" mentoring program. Tea for Two is $200 per hour and catered specifically to you so that you learn what you want to learn! Shoot me an email if you'd like to know more.

Check out the cool images Amy made using my xmp files!! (Remember, xmp files are "recipes" that are applied to RAW files. Because the original file remains untouched, she can easily apply a DIFFERENT xmp file to these images and get a totally new look and a new jpeg. Then, if she wants, she can apply her favorite actions to the jpegs... but she doesn't have to!)

Then, the very hip Blu Domain Blog did a quick e-interview for a feature on me that was also posted today!

New Year's Eve with David Jay, Dane & Brett!!

David Jay is a friend of mine and a photographer I have admired for some time. I was thrilled when he asked me back in August to shoot his New Year's Eve wedding with him, Dane Sanders, and Brett Austin.

Last night's wedding was hands down the most unbelievable thing I have seen in a long time. It was a looong day (11am - 2am) but it was such a pleasure to be shooting along side such talented photographers, and we all had a rockin' good time! Unfortunately, we are not at liberty to post any of the actual photographs from the wedding because it is going to be published and must be kept under wraps until then. However, at the end of the night we all jumped into the photobooth and did these fun self-portraits.

Click on the links to DJ and Dane's blogs to see the other versions of our photobooth self-portrait as well as a few other fun pics from the night.

There was a whole team producing this wedding and we all communicated with headsets, as if we were on a movie set. It was a Christmas theme, and it felt like we were working in Narnia!!

I also lead the Los Angeles Pictage User Group at my house once a month and have really enjoyed getting the inside scoop from Pictage.

Yesterday, I opened my door to find a very nice surprise waiting for me from Pictage. As a thank you for speaking this year at PartnerCon, they sent me a pound of Peet's Coffee (How did they know I am a TOTAL coffee addict??) and a beautiful leather-bound stainless steel thermos.

Wedding Cinematography

The cool thing about going to so many incredible weddings is the number of truly talented vendors I am priviledged to meet and work with. This past weekend I worked with the very creative cinematic team, Cinematic Studios, who not only had footage of the day for guests to view during the reception, but had made a fun "movie" with the bride and groom a few weeks before as well. The whole thing was really entertaining, and the guests just loved it.

I received an email today letting me know that Cinematic Studios is using two of my images on their website. I can't explain the wonderful feeling I get when my clients are thrilled with their wedding images, but it is equally flattering when another professional finds my images good enough to use on their own sites!

Joy has been designing most of my albums lately, and she is an amazing addition to the Jules Bianchi team. She already shoots with me at all of my Bay Area weddings, and having her do album design is just another way that our synergy is really able to flourish.

Here's a sneak peek of one spread from the book. Its one of Joy's favorite pages!! (Mine, too!)
