Light & Fast Two

The second Light and Fast Seminar took place yesterday, and it was a great success! This time the group was much smaller, so John Mireles and I were able to give a lot more personal attention to our attendees. Check out this super nice email that Jeanette Sanchez sent to me today! You can check out more about her experience here on her blog.

"Hi Jules,

I want to thank you again for all the info. you shared with us yesterday regarding weddings. I was really confused before I came to your seminar and now I feel confident that I CAN do off camera lighting in a dark church or dim reception, THANK YOU. I love how you sat on the floor and let us peek into your bag, ask a ton of questions, and laugh with you like we were old friends. It was worth every penny I spent and time I had to put aside to attend. I am going to recommend this seminar to any photographer who desires to see the LIGHT!

Warmly,
Jeanette"

Well thank YOU, Jeanette, (and everyone who came) for attending our seminar!

John, the Lighting Master, giving a demo.

I loved how John's images came up on the screen for everyone to see what he was doing.

Here I am giving my portion of the Seminar.

Thank you to Youkeun Oh for taking this snap of me showing my lighting set-up.

A little outdoor hands-on demonstration.

Everyone chimping over John's shoulder!

The whole gang!

Jules Bianchi speaks for the PPGBA

Tonight I gave a presentation as part of the Professional Photographers of the Greater Bay Area's May Four Nights. This marks the third time I have spoken for the PPGBA. I am always so flattered when they ask me to speak, but this time I was especially honored to be included in the line-up because the other three speakers are the talented Marc Benjamin, Gene Higa and Anna Kuperberg.

Thank you to everyone who attended and for participating in my talk. I had a really wonderful time!

Win a Shootsac on Jules Café!

Jules Café has teamed up with the fabulous Jessica Claire of Shootsac and she is donating Shootsacs for our lucky Jules Café winners! Thank you Jess! I love my shootsac and use it all the time. You will love yours too!

All you have to do to enter is this: sign up for the newsletter here. If you are already on our newsletter list, you are already entered in the contest. When we get back from Oregon next week, we will randomly choose the winners and they will be announced in the newsletter that you are signing up for.

Don't worry, we don't like spam any more than you do, and there is always an unsubscribe button if you wanna get out. But you won't.

Jessica Claire put a lot of thought into her bag because she made a bag that she herself wanted to use. It is the first lens bag designed to pick up where your camera bag leaves off--it's designed just for shooting. Lenses, batteries, flashcards & necessities are comfortably at your fingertips. Can a camera bag really change the way you shoot? Shootsac thinks so. I think so, too.

My favorite shootsac cover: Festive!

Jules Bianchi speaking for Livebooks

On Tuesday, I spoke on the WPPI traderoom floor for Livebooks. That was really different for me because rather than having a room full of people, there were a few chairs in front of the screen and then the whole traderoom floor around me! I think the talk went well, however, and I was very excited to show off my brand new Livebooks site!

Thank you, Joy, for taking these pics of me speaking.

Jules Bianchi on the "Ladies of Photography" panel

On Sunday, Pictage had a mini PartnerCon in Vegas. I was so honored to be a part of the "Ladies of Photography" panel with Me Ra Koh and Pepper Nix. Unfortunately, although Liana Lehman was supposed to be on the panel too, she was too sick to join. Sara France was the moderator, and there were about 700 people in the audience! We covered a bunch of different topics from what it was like being a woman in the photography industry to how blogs affect our lives. I had a great time.

Thank you to Joy for all the pics of me speaking!

Immediately after the panel, I was interviewed to be on Mike Colon's blog. The interview was all about Jules CAFE! Speaking of which...check out all the tea cookies Joy and my mother prepared to announce the Jules CAFE launch. How cute are they?

Funny Movie Trailer Starring Industry Icons

I just flew back from Las Vegas and WPPI yesterday, and I am exhausted. Joy and I arrived on Saturday afternoon, and the very first thing we did was join Ron Dawson to shoot another hilarious Cinematic Studios spoof. This one involved photography industry icons Bambi Cantrell, Joe Photo, Michele Celentano, Joe Buissink, Yervant, Jim Garner, & Matthew Jordan Smith. I was the set photographer. Here are some stills from the shoot, and below you can watch the trailer that was created that day!

I will be posting more from my trip to Vegas so come back again soon!

Jules Café

I'm sooo excited to announce that Jules Cafe is finally up and running! First and foremost I want to thank my sister, Joy, and my best friend, William, of Cobalt Kitty for designing and implementing the whole thing. YOU TWO ARE AMAZING!!!

So! Initially Jules Cafe was meant to be a place for photographers to sign up for my Tea for Two and purchase the custom presets that I designed. But its become so much more than that. Joy decided that it really needed to be a place for folks to visit and see what is new not just with ME, but with all of the fantastic photographers who are out there with amazing things to share.

Please check out the site and see all of the cool freebies and discounts and things that are being offered by both me and great photographers around the country! There are also tips, tricks, & goodies for you to enjoy, and we'll be adding more all the time.

I am leaving for Vegas and WPPI tomorrow, so please come find me! I will be speaking at the Livebooks booth at 2pm on Tuesday and helping John Mireles man his booth as well. Come by to say hello and pick up some Jules Cafe tea cookies!!

Jules Bianchi featured at Leather Craftsmen

All of my albums are bound at Leather Craftsmen. Their quality is unparalleled, and the customer service I've received from them is always exemplary. They have hundreds and hundreds of photographer clients from all across the country, so I was beyond flattered when they asked if they could feature my work in a sample of their brand new style of album. This is an album that is really going to be unique to the industry!

Leather Craftsmen chose five photographers to create samples from, and I'm so honored be featured along side the amazing talents of Joe Buissink, Mike Colon, Andy Marcus & Jasmine Star.

I'm not at liberty to reveal too many details about the new style of album right now, so DEFINITELY check out the Leather Craftsmen booth at WPPI later this month! The sample they created from the gorgeous Carneros Inn Wedding I shot last October will be there, and its going to blow you away.

This is the email blast that went out this morning... Leather Craftsmen is using red as a theme to tie the new books together, and I can't wait to see them all!

Thirst Relief Auction

Each year my friend, Davina Fear, organizes a charity auction for Thirst Relief by inviting photographers to donate their time to mentor. It has been a huge success in the past, so if you are interested in being mentored by one of your favorite photographers be sure to bid. Mentoring sessions are an opportunity for you to have your website reviewed, talk about marketing, pricing, have your work critiqued, or just get help in any way that you can. Bidding starts today!

Click here to get to the site. The site will have a Thirst Relief banner that you can click on that will take you directly to the auction site. All times listed through out the auction are based on Eastern Standard Time, and you will need to register in order to place a bid on your mentoring session.

The auction will take place for three days from February 9-February 12th. Auctions will end on the 12th (unless the mentoring session you want is having a bidding war…in which case your auction will end when people stop bidding).

Thank you to Shannon Lott for taking photographs throughout the day and to Adam Lopez for video taping. Also thank you to everyone who attended - you are the reason the seminar was so great! I can't believe the number of people who flew in (from as far as South Carolina, Florida and Connecticut to name just a few states) to participate. Check out some of the super nice comments!!

"I learned more than my college courses in only one day! wooo hooo! I wanted to thank you so much for all that you showed me. You're an incredible girl with a enormous heart. The fabulous John Mireles:

Here I am wrapping up my presentation:

Our fantastic participants:

John used me as a model for a few of his lighting set-ups, and I loved how the images came up on the wall seconds after he shot them!

Beyond Just Images Contest

The Australian Photography Forum, Beyond Just Images, asked me to participate in their "12 Days of Christmas" Contest. The first prize of the 12 Days is a free set of my custom presets!

They recently added a "Library" area to the forum and are building it up as a resource area where photographers from all stages (just starting out right through to Top Level Professionals) can go to find source materials, training, information, etc. They are looking to help enable members to take and deliver the very best images they can for their business and for the industry as a whole. For the competition, all members have to do is add a link, review, text, etc, to the new library area of the forum.

The members have been instructed to come to my blog to find out the winner for Day One... and the winner is:

Heidi Brand! Congratulations, Heidi! The presets are SO fun, you'll love them!

Lighting Seminar!!

Many of you who have had a private "Tea for Two" mentorship with me have asked about lighting. I have a very simple but effective lighting set-up that I bring to all of my weddings, and I'm now addicted to it. I hate to shoot a wedding without it! I'm still a huge fan of natural light, mind you, its just that you are given so many more options if you have your own lights to play with as well!

Because of the interest and the seeming need for other photographers to learn about lighting, I am teaming up with the fantastic John Mireles of Ventana Weddings to do a lighting workshop here in Los Angeles on Thursday, January 24th. I'm so excited about it!

John is going to focus more on studio lighting, and I will talk more about on-the-go portable lighting. There will be both lecturing and hands-on training. The workshop will be from 10am - 5pm and the costs are as follows:

$250 if you sign up in November
$300 if you sign up in December
$350 if you sign up in January

This is a super deal if you think about it... the Tea for Two is $200 per hour, and this is five hours of learning!!

CLICK HERE to download a PDF with a course description and outline of the day.

For more information and to sign up, please shoot an email to me: jules@julesbianchi.com

Jules Bianchi speaks at UCR!

a few weeks ago, I was asked by Mary Kristen to lecture as a guest speaker in the Digital Wedding Photography class she teaches at the University of California Riverside extension program. I really enjoy teaching photography, and I had so much fun last week that I was really looking forward to it... despite the long drive! The class was tiny which was cool.. it was much more intimate that way, and I got a chance to talk to everyone there. A few students mentioned that they are planning to sign up for my Tea for Two private mentorship, which would be awesome!

I'm going to work on my 11/11 wedding tonight - I promise - so check back tomorrow for that.

Thanks for inviting me to speak and for shooting these great pics, Greg!

Tea for Two with Lilia

I have been having so much fun with the Tea for Two sessions lately. Whenever possible, I bring my mentee to a wedding with me because I think there is a lot to learn from observing how another photographer works. My latest mentee, Lilia Ahner of Lilia Photography just wrote me the coolest testimonial AND put a post about the experience on her blog! If you are a photographer who would be interested in a Tea for Two session, feel free to shoot me an emaill at jules@julesbianchi.com.

The lovely Lilia:

"I came home beaming after my Tea for Two session with Jules Bianchi. Having a private mentoring session customized for my needs with personal attention from Jules was priceless. Not only was Jules enthusiastic and dynamic, but she shared her years of experience and answered my questions about lighting, exposure, marketing, advertising, and client consultations. Most importantly, she taught me how to become organized and to create very specific, manageable goals--both short-term and long-term. She has helped me to think differently about my business and shared so much valuable information that I can definitely take my photography skills and business to the next level. I can't thank Jules enough!"

F-Stop Beyond

My very innovative friend, Ron Dawson, launched a very cool new site called F-Stop Beyond.

The concept is this:

"F-Stop Beyond, a show that journeys into the heart of the visual artist. It’s our hope that this will be a program unlike any other. One that will reveal the underlying textures and personalities of your favorite photographers, videographers, and filmmakers. Beyond the techniques and talent, this show is about people. The people behind the lens. The souls underneath the exterior. Beyond brands and beyond the hype."

Love it! Ron interviewed me earlier this month at PartnerCon, and I'm on the show this week!! Even though he got the sound on his video camera, the interviews are sound only. You can click on the bar below to hear it or just go to F-Stop Beyond.

Jules Bianchi, PPGBA speaker and WPJA winner!!

Right now, I am at the Best Western Hotel in San Francisco... I flew up here this afternoon to speak for the Professional Photographers of the Greater Bay Area workshop that is held once a month. There were about 80 photographers who came to hear me speak - it was quite a rush!! I was also asked to judge a print competition which was exciting and intimidating at the same time. I loved critiquing the images, but it was hard knowing the photographers who made the images were in the room somewhere listening to my comments. I tried to be constructive! THANK YOU to both my mother and my sister who drove out from the East Bay to hear me speak. I love you!!

And speaking of contests, I came back to my room only to get an email saying that the The Wedding PhotoJournalist Association photography contest results were back. I know there are hundreds of entrys, so I was thrilled to discover that one of my images placed 11th in the "cake cutting" category! How fun! Congratulations to the couple in the photo, Jen and DJ, who's wedding I photographed this past May.

Photopiece, Los Angeles

My friend, photographer Leanna Creel, is a volunteer for a cool organization to help inner-city kids called Photopiece. Photopiece is a 10 week course with the goal to expose, inspire and accompany teenagers as they learn basic photographic skills.

Each week they invite a different kind of photographer to speak, and this week I was invited to speak about wedding photography. I brought sample albums and talked about how I started and what it was like to be a wedding photographer. I was very flattered to be asked to speak and very impressed with the kid's work that I was shown.

Jules Bianchi speaks for the PPGBA!

Last night I was the final speaker in the Professional Photographers of The Greater Bay Area's "Four Nights" Series for May. May's topic was weddings, so among other things, I talked about marketing, shooting, workflow and how I use my custom xmp files to easily and quickly batch process RAW files in Bridge without ever opening ACR. (Shoot me an email if you're interested: jules@julesbianchi.com)

Thank you to both my mother and sister who came to hear me speak and shot all of the photos for my blog. Love you, guys!!

The lecture was held at PhotoLab in Berkeley, and besides the fact that I LOVED seeing all the FILM that was still stocked there, I almost fell over when I saw what they were using as a DOORSTOP.

I had one of these when I was 17!!

You can see my blog behind me because we touched on the importance of blogging and what that could mean to them on a marketing level.

I spent most of the lecture here behind my computer because most of my talk was workflow demonstration.

This is my new friend, Harry Burton. Check out the film behind us!!

They even presented me with this lovely certificate. THANK YOU, guys, it was an honor!

World Wide (Web) premiere of Jules Bianchi Photography promo video!!

Because I returned from shooting in Seattle so very late last night, I did not plan to get up early. However, this morning Joy woke me with a call to tell me that Ron Dawson of the super creative Cinematic Studios.net (for wedding industry types) AND Cinematic Studios.com (for brides) created the coolest, funniest promotional video for Jules Bianchi Photography!
