Bel Air Bay Club

lauren & adam
august 2, 2008

Joy flew down from the Bay Area to shoot Lauren & Adam's wedding with me, so I was already really happy about that. But I was also super happy to be shooting Lauren & Adam's wedding because they are totally my kind of couple: completely in love and ALL about getting great photographs!

The wedding was kept on time flawlessly by Carol from Party Designs by Carol. The flowers provided by Ricardo of Luna Gardens were incredibly lush and beautiful.

During the reception, Lauren danced a fancy tango with her father. Then she and Adam sang to their guests a hilarious spoof about how they met. It was hard to shoot because I was laughing so hard! Thank you, Lauren & Adam, for such a good time!!

I wasn't kidding about my amazing clients!

Today I opened my front door, and a huge box was sitting there for me! While the chilling system inside was intriguing, the best part was the delicious Dean & Deluca treats that came as a thank you from my July 12th clients, Darlene & Jeff. THANK YOU for this, guys! Chocolate covered ANYTHING is my favorite!!!! You are the best! I'm working on your slideshow this week, so check back to see it soon.

St. Luke's Orthodox Church & Richard Nixon Library

nadya & daniel
july 19, 2008

As many of you know, this is the first year that Jules Bianchi Photography has taken on an associate, Shannon Lott. Shannon has been my second shooter for a while, and she is now shooting weddings as the first shooter for me as well. Nadya & Daniel hired Shannon to shoot their wedding, so I tagged along to play Shannon's second shooter.

I thought the wedding was absolutely stunning and Shannon did an amazing job. Even though the schedule was tight, things ran smoothly thanks to Jennifer at GBK Productions. The ceremony took place at the GORGEOUS St. Luke's Orthodox Church in Garden Grove, and the reception was at the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda.

Shutters on the Beach, Santa Monica

darlene & jeff
july 12, 2008

Its really hard to blog. I love so many images from all of my weddings, and this one is no exception. The wedding was really striking because Darlene & Jeff's colors were hot pink and navy blue! I loved how at the end of the night, Jeff surprised his new wife by singing a song that he had written for her.

Here are a few of the elements that made it fantastic:

Wedding Coordination: Stephanie Lairson
Flowers: Gilly Flowers
Hair & Make-Up: Joyce Luck
Photo Booth: Red Cheese
Cinematography: Living Cinema

Before & After

After checking out my blog last night, my sister asked what I did to the following image. For all you photographers who follow my blog, I thought I would go ahead and share with you as well.

My thought process:

When I first saw Julie's colors (red tones) I was excited because I knew there was a red wall in the parking lot level of the Walt Disney Concert Hall where she was getting married. For this image, I asked them to hold hands and look at me. I wanted them to simply stand quietly together because I was trying to capture something that might evoke feelings of a vintage wedding image like this one:

How I shot it:

I was shooting in RAW with my Canon 5D and my new 50mm 1.2 lens. This image was shot in manual mode at 1/80, f 1.6, ISO 500.

Because it was rather dark down there, I used my Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 and had Shannon hold my 580 EX flash to light them. She was off to my side on a short staircase at about a 45 degree angle to the couple, and she held the light above her head pointed down at them.

My post-processing:

I used my own custom preset, "jb bluesy", to process the RAW file in Bridge and then applied Kevin Kubota's action, "The Look" to the jpg. I used The Boutwell's Totally Rad Action, "Yin/Yang" to get some of the detail back in Julie's dress and to pop a tiny bit of light back into their eyes. I then applied Jesh De Rox's Fine Art Texture, "He Loved Her Italian Accent" to create the velvet wallpaper look in the background. The last thing I did was add an 85 warming filter set at 25% and remove the shadow behind Yas in Photoshop.

Wah lah!!

Walt Disney Concert Hall & Mission 261

julie & yas
july 5, 2008

Saturday's ceremony took place at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. The weather was a little hot, but Julie & Yas had the most amazing, on-time bridal party I could hope for. We had allotted a lot of time for photographs, and I'll tell you, Shannon & I got a lot of fantastic shots. The reception was in San Gabriel at the adorable Mission 261.

I just bought myself the 50mm 1.2, so most of the day was shot with that. I LOVE it.

Julie had the cutest details. I loved the tiny flower that adorned everything.

Everyone got ready down the street at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel.

Then we headed over to the Walt Disney Concert Hall for portraits.

I love this pose that Shannon suggested for Julie & Yas.

I was crazy about her red shoes. So gorgeous.

I was excited to take them down to the red wall at the parking lot level of the Walt Disney Concert Hall. It matched their day!!

Julie's grandmother released butterflies at the start of their ceremony. I flipped out when I saw this shot that Shannon captured.

Mr. & Mrs. - My favorite moment!

Beautiful details at Mission 261

Julie & Yas did a choreographed first dance that was just perfect.

After breaking an enormous sake barrel, Julie & Yas were toasted with personalized sake cups.

This was a traditional Japanese dance that was performed as a surprise for the couple. Julie & Yas throw a great party, and Shannon and I had a lot of fun.

I thought Saturday was the coolest date to get married, and I was excited to see it inscribed on the inside of Marc's wedding band. I was in love with this couple...Rebecca and Marc had their dog, Karma, in the wedding, and they had just about the cutest details you could ever hope to find at a wedding!

An intimate wedding, Downtown Los Angeles

josh & heidi
may 31, 2008

Saturday's intimate wedding took place in Josh & Heidi's downtown loft in a 100 yr. old bank building, 5 floors up, in front of the wall of windows and the fire escape where Josh proposed. He is a used book-dealer, so there are tens of thousands of books shelved and stacked everywhere around the apartment. Of course I was thrilled to discover that their dog, Hero, was the ring bearer!

I thought Heidi's make-up was beautifully done by Lenore Todd. Also, I would like to thank Shannon Leith who referred Heidi & Josh to me.

Everyone threw streamers at the new Mr. & Mrs.

Their wedding cake was the funkiest thing I'd ever seen - it was a castle with a tower of books on top and graffiti to reflect their downtown urban home below.

Natalie & Kyle are my kind of clients. They are crazy about each other, very close with their friends and families and they were ALL about getting great photographs on their wedding day. We had so much time allotted to photography that we were able to get really creative. If you are planning your wedding and want really great photographs, giving your photographer enough time to create them for you is a very important element to remember.

Also, Shannon and I had the pleasure of shooting with Shaun Ring of Shaun Ring Photography who flew out all the way from Kentucky to shoot the wedding with me as part of the Tea for Two mentorship program I offer for photographers. Shaun, you were awesome!!

There are so many images that I love, so come back soon to see the slideshow. For now, here are a few favorites:

I love this moment Shaun captured when I was shooting the huge group photo.

Shannon & Patrick were married this Saturday at the Crow Canyon Country Club. I love shooting in the Bay Area because my sister, Joy, shoots with me. This time, we also had the pleasure of shooting with Caroline Winata of Tiny Water Photography who joined us as part of her Tea for Two with me. She is an amazing photographer and a really fun person to be around.

I'm speaking for the May 4 Nights for the Professional Photographers of the Greater Bay Area this Tuesday night, so I need to tweak my presentation now. I will put a slideshow together from Shannon & Patrick's wedding soon, so check back for that!

For now, some favorites:

Its 1am and I'm downloading all of the images from the lovely wedding we shot today. I love them so much! One thing I love to do at my weddings is try to come up with a creative way to showcase the wedding rings. Shannon & Patrick had this amazing "wish tree" for their guests to write well wishes and hang them on the tree. This is where we decided to shoot the rings - check it out: (Bed now, more images tomorrow!)

Shannon and I had a great day, however, and I wanted to post two images that caught my eye as I was downloading them. I will try to get more up tomorrow, but I have to prepare for the talk I'm giving at Kevin Kubota's Bootcamp on monday and my flight is at 9am Monday morning. Going to sleep now!

Coyote Hills Golf Course

Shannon Lott has been my second shooter for a while and is now the new Jules Bianchi Photography Associate. I just adore both her easy-going personality and her cool shooting style. Before she signed on with me however, Shannon had already booked a few weddings under her own company for this year. Today she was shooting one of those weddings, so I decided to tag along and be HER second shooter for the day. I love second shooting because its all the fun of the wedding with none of the responsibility! (okay, there's still responsibility, but there's certainly a lot less pressure when you're not in charge!)

Today's bride was a twin, like me! Here are just a couple of favorites:

And thanks to Jodie Watson of Supreme Organization, the wedding progressed flawlessly. Lori & Jason's Wedding Part Two

lori & jason
02-04-08

Perhaps you remember last month my friends, Lori & Jason, were married at the very cool Union Station downtown. Because they immediately headed to New Zealand for their honeymoon, the reception part of the wedding didn't happen until last night. It was a very simple (but fun!) affair with friends and family at their adorable home.

Union Station

lori & jason
02-04-08

I have known Lori & Jason for many years and they are dear friends of mine. I was so excited when I found out that they were getting married, and I was honored to be the ONLY guest at their extremely private Union Station wedding this afternoon. Lori & Jason chose today's date - 02/04/08 - as their wedding date because they liked the "powers of 2" that it represents. I love that!!

We started at Union Station downtown, tried to go to City Hall but were evacuated after someone pulled the fire alarm, shot at the very cool Bradbury Building and then headed back to City Hall to shoot in the rotunda and on the roof with the city scape behind us. The party will be in another month after Lori & Jason return from New Zealand!

Getting married...

Union Station has such a vintage feel to it that I really love.

Waiting for the train...

Evacuated from City Hall!

Their rings are SO unique..titanium and wood.

Kohl Mansion, Burlingame

jackie & chris
january 5, 2008

I kicked off the New Year right away with a wedding within the first five days! Living in California, I don't see too much rain at my weddings, so when my Blackberry stated 100% chance of rain, I thought it would be a great opportunity to get some shots of my couple under an umbrella. I abandoned the plain black ones I had brought with me when I saw the best man, Phil, arriving with his amazing black and white checkered one!

When I shoot in the Bay Area, my second shooter is my sister, Joy. She is so fun to be around and makes my day that much better. We had never shot at the Kohl Mansion before, and we absolutely LOVED it. If you are planning a wedding there, please hire me! I want to shoot there again! Jackie's flowers were STUNNING and were created by Carol Antraccoli of An Added Touch of Flowers.

I am still in the Bay Area and will be driving back to LA (finally!) tomorrow... so I'll put together a slideshow this week. For now a few favs!!

I just love this one that Joy caught of Jackie and her father coming down the aisle.

I love this moment between Chris and his lovely daughter, Sydney.
